Labyrinth Nomination for Bill Dougherty
by Paddy Lally
This year we will do something that is unlikely to ever be repeated. This year we are inducting someone into the Minotaurs Hall of Fame after their first ever game playing for the Minotaurs Senior team. It’s fitting that now is the right time that we induct Bill Dougherty into the Labyrinth as he has now done just about everything imaginable someone could do with this club. His commitment to the club throughout almost a decade has been second to none. Since joining the club he has worked tirelessly to improve the club both on and off the field and tonight we get an opportunity to thank Bill for his loyal Service to the Westmeath Minotaurs football club.
Since joining the club in 2015 when he began working with the youth team he has held roles such as but not limited to treasurer, Secretary , Offensive Coordinator , Defensive coordinator and Head Coach. In all of these positions Bill did his job to the absolute highest standard and without his ambition for the improvement of the club and the professionalism he showed throughout the club would be miles behind where it is today. He has set the club up for the future by creating solid foundations for success be it through the clubs guidebook, the many grants he secured to ensure we have some of the best equipment available even down to making sure we look the part on the field.
From the first day Bill became involved with any Minotaurs team he talked about the joy of bringing a championship to the Minotaurs and as head coach in 2022 that’s exactly what he did.
The road to winning that Division 1 championship was a long one and guidance, playbooks, many videos and hours of on field coaching from Bill is exactly what this team needed to finally have the success it had been longing for. He did it by always putting the team first by bringing the coaches together to work towards the ultimate goal and supported his players in every way he could. He redefined the standards of what it took to be a Minotaur.
We all know that Bill loves the Philadelphia Eagles but I truly believe he loves the Minotaurs more. That’s because I have never seen someone look like they are about to have a nervous breakdown every time a defensive player loses contain and it’s visible that he cannot contain his passion for this team to execute and succeed. The truth is there is no way to cover every single reason why bill deserves to be in the club Hall of Fame but thankfully, now he will always be recognized for his outstanding achievements and sustained commitment to the Minotaurs as we welcome him into the Labyrinth, where he will always be known as a legend of the club and man has he earned it.
Congratulations Bill Dougherty, The Fifth member to be inducted to the Labyrinth
